General Project Information

In this three-year research project, which is funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF), we investigate the experiences of persons who were exposed to physical, sexual, and emotional abuse in institutions of the child welfare system of Vienna (foster care homes for children and young people, but also foster families and suchlike), by employing objective and scientifically proven methods. We also study the psychosocial long-term correlates of this abuse. The aim of this study is to obtain an overall picture of the consequences of institutional abuse for affected persons from institutions of the child welfare system of Vienna and, subsequently, to develop strategies for effective prevention and support.

This research project is directed at all affected persons who have turned to the “branch for persons affected by abuse in institutions of the Wiener Jugendwohlfahrt” of the aid organization Weißer Ring and have already received financial compensation.

How are potential study participants contacted?

We give data protection top priority. Therefore, the research team does not have any access to personal data without the express written consent of an affected person. Since we do not have any data from affected persons at hand, the aid organization Weißer Ring sends out our information letter concerning the study to all affected persons who have already been compensated. Hence, Weißer Ring has the position as a communication mediator between the research team and affected persons. Apart from that, the research team carries out its work independently of the organization Weißer Ring or the City of Vienna.

There are different options for participation in the study, all of which require the written consent of the affected persons. (Opens internal link in current windowsee participation in the study)
